Historically Turquoise was popular amongst the Pharaohs, Turks and Native Americans - the most valued variety of turquoise is an intense sky blue colour which made it sacred to the Native American community who worshipped the sea and sky connection. The name Turquoise originates from the French translation of ‘Turkish stone’ which is ‘pierre turquoise’ as it was brought to Europe by Venetia merchants who found the stones in Turkish bazaars… although it would have been mined in what was known as Persia at the time. As well as Iran, Turquoise is also native to Mexico, Chile, Iran, US, Australia and Cornwall! Turquoise is a very beautiful stone which lends itself well to intricate detailing as well as large costume jewellery.

Other birthstones include Zircon - This gemstone is found in a rainbow of colours, and possesses such brilliance that colourless zircons are the best imitators of diamonds.  An extra thoughtful touch if the recipient is a sickly/coldly one – in the 11th century it was believe to protect people from injury, and disease and so much so during the 14th century as a safeguard against the Great Plague. A very modern addition to the December gem family, is the beautiful violet coloured Tanzanite. Its name originates from Tanzania, the country in which it was discovered and is solely mined. Associated with contentment and understanding, the tanzanite's stunning rich colour can be attributed to an optical phenomenon known as pleochroism, where differnet colours can be seen within the gemstone when viewed from different angles.
